Parts of this castle have been used for many films, including Harry Potter. It is also still used as a residence by the Duke of Northumberland and his family.

The Gardens of Heijo Kyo, during the 1300th Anniversary celebrations at Nara, Japan.

This place was incredibly beautiful, and seeing the 1300 year old artifacts discovered on the site was amazing.

St. Kinga’s Chapel in the Wieliczka Salt Mines, some 15km outside Krakow in Poland. There are daily walking tours which descend 185m underground. Not good for claustrophobics, but a beautiful place to visit with some amazing sculptures crafted by the miners, as well as the chapel, which is around 120m underground, if I recall right.

I know, I know. This hardly a work of wondrous beauty, but I do love it for the simplicity, especially since it was taken when I was travelling on a train at over 50mph.

This was the longer route from Edinburgh to Glasgow. I would say it’s technically more scenic for some of the journey, but then you hit a load of tiny towns and it becomes less so.

I happened to go to the Meiji Shrine on 3rd November 2010, unaware that it was a hugely significant day for kids of certain ages. I was there early, before it got mobbed, but I was there long enough to see the influx of families in full formal kimono. It was fantastic to see so many generations. I did see four generations of one family, each in kimono.
